Movie Craze

Happy New Year! Yes I'm a terrible blogger, but at least I write once in a while:-)

I wanted to share that I've actually gone out of one of my comfort zone aspects and seen *gasp* new movies that have been out for a while! Usually, like ordering in a restaurant, I prefer to have what I know is good instead of sampling something new. I've been pushing myself to watch movies that I haven't seen (and sometimes haven't even heard of!). Sean got Netflix several months ago and we watch movies or TV shows we've seen in our lifetime. However, the last 2-3 months, I've tried to see different movies. So, here's a list of other movies that I can now say I've SEEN!

- Julie & Julia: Cute movie, actually decent. I liked the way the story flipped from 1949 with Julia to present day with Julie. And it's based on a book that's based on actual events. It's slightly inspiring, but don't worry, I'm not taking up French Cooking anytime soon :)

- Pink Panther 2: Just as "slap-forehead" funny as the first one. I think it exists for the purpose of the last 15 minutes of the movie, when all is solved and we have an unfathomable hero. If it wasn't for that "scene" where the lady is describing..."appearances" of a woman to Clouseau to teach him the proper way to react, I think it'd be decent for kids.

- The Business of Being Born: This one was actually a documentary recommended for me to see by a dear nurse friend and another close friend. It's all about the controversy between giving birth in a hospital and having a natural birth. It's actually a very good look at how hospitals view a woman in labor and the pros of natural birth. I feel this was bit unbalanced in info for both sides, but it at least makes me think about my options for the (far off!) future!

- Serious Moonlight: I am a hit and miss fan of Meg Ryan. Kate and Leopold, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail....all of those are favorites. I was looking for a cute romance/comedy to watch and found this one on Netflix. Unfortunately, this is not a favorite. There's a lot of cursing (f words included), grabbing, insinuations, and the entire plot of the movie is that Meg Ryan is trying to keep her husband from divorcing her to marry another woman he loves. I guess this is one of those "I should have seen it coming" movies. Good ending :P

- Someone Like You: I will admit, when I saw Hugh Jackman on the cover, this helped in my decision to watch it. Unfortunately, the main actress is Ashley Judd, who will forever remind me of the movie when she's falsely accused to be the murderer of her husband and Tommy Lee Jones is chasing her - Double Jeopardy anyone? It was a decent flick, but something I wouldn't see twice. Ashley meets a great guy, dates him for several weeks, then breaks up over interesting circumstances. She has to move in with her womanizing co-worker (enter Hugh) and becomes a man-hater:P It's good for a few laughs.

- VeggieTales: It's a Meaningful Life: I'm sure Sean's still upset by the fact that this was ever on the queue, since it now puts cartoons in our "you'll like this" file:P This is an ADORABLE remake of "It's a Wonderful Life" with VeggieTales. I heard about it from a friend who was thinking of ways to tell their children about Santa Clause while keeping Christ the center of Christmas. The intro to this story is Bob telling the children about who Saint Nicholas was, with the usual not quite historically accurate, but I think that as long as it's made for young children, the basic concepts are okay:) It also has a story about Larry wishing his life was different, thus going through the "Wonderful Life" scenes as well. Cute and definitely worth watching again!

- The Bounty Hunter: Gerard Butler plays a bounty hunter who has to find his ex-wife who has skipped bail on account of being a news reporter with leads to a very big story. However, ex-wife happens to be Jennifer Aniston, who won't go down without a fight. Cute movie, but I hate the...... smugness (took me a while to think of a polite word) that is Gerard Butler. I love him in "Phantom of the Opera," but it might just be that the movie itself was incredible:P It also plays on the marital issues that they faced, as well as one of those scenes where he said/she heard just frustrates you throughout the rest of the movie because they can't resolve it. Maybe just because I'm a newlywed, I got upset that they didn't figure out a way to talk politely to one another for 30 seconds of the movie. I miiight watch this again because it does have several good laughs, but it might take some conning as well.

- Annie: I was hesitant to put this up, but I finally decided I should. I've seen bits and pieces of the movie, but never in its entirety. This was really good, though the teacher in me was going nuts whenever they had orphanage scenes. Just means I need more real-life experience, right? :P Cute movie, I'd definitely watch it again.

- Dear John: This one got some raving reviews from random places, so when I saw it on Netflix, I thought "Hey, why not?" This movie was alright, but definitely could have been a bit more....inviting? interactive? something? I felt like I was watching the film before final cuts. Some scenes took forever, others just didn't have anything to do with the rest of the movie. I saw this back in OCTOBER and still remember this! I didn't really like this one too much.

Alright, that's from Oct 2010 to Jan 15, 2011. I have a list of other movies I intend to see this winter, but I'd love to hear some suggestions! I'm thinking more action movies need to be thrown in there. Let me know :)

  1. Thanks for saving me time. I too would have watched just to see Hugh Jackman, but won't bother now. MTH
